About this blog

Welcome to Backpackers Corner, a travel blog where I would like to share my experiences with my readers and to offer some useful travel advice. On this site you will find a number of articles about my travels, all of which are written by me unless otherwise noted. I’m afraid I’m not a great photographer but I do try to include some of my better pictures in the articles I write as well.

Though this blog is primarily targeted towards backpackers, I hope that all sorts of travellers should be able to find some useful and interesting information here. I tend to specialise in going to places that are quite off the beaten track although I do sometimes like to get back to civilisation once in awhile and there are various cities I love going back to a frequent basis.

I tend to travel very slowly and often get stuck in places for a whole summer but during that time I certainly won’t be doing the same thing every day. I believe you can really only get to know a place if you spend a lot of time there and get to know people who live there. To me this is what makes the fundamental difference between holidays and travelling.

A bit about me

I was born and brought up in the United Kingdom and have spent a considerable amount of time abroad, both with my family and by myself.

I have had the travel bug ever since I spent two years out of school with my family, living on a tiny boat with absolutely no mod-cons in Venezuela in the South Caribbean. I was between twelve and fourteen at the time and I still consider this to be amongst the most valuable experiences of my life.

In the last six years I have been travelling on and off in Eastern Europe, an area of the world which I have long had a great interest in. However, now much of it is changed, especially with the joining of ten new countries into the European Union. Prices have risen and tourism has skyrocketed in many of the destinations which I once considered only five or six years ago to be rather off the beaten track. Nonetheless, there are still plenty of places of interest to me which are not yet touched by mass tourism.

I have also lived in a number of countries including, most notably, Lithuania where I was based in Vilnius on and off for several years. Lithuania also happens to be where my girlfriend comes from and with her, I have a daughter, one of the more impressive achievements of my times travelling!

I have also spent a great deal of time in Prague, Czech Republic and Lviv, Ukraine and more recently, I spent an entire winter in the Transylvanian town of Sighişoara, famed birthplace of the real Dracula.

The next destinations on the top of my list includes seeing more of Ukraine and most of all, a visit to Georgia and Armenia which has long fascinated me so keep visiting to see the updates!
